Actually, I guess those girls were probably envied by some children, since they had such fancy clothes and elaborate hairdo's. I agree, I wasn't turned on by either , but styles changed so often in history. No one today would be caught dead in a Nehru jacket and beads or a toga and sandals, but they were fashion statements once.

There is nothing miserable about this photo. The mother prepared her beloved daughters with so much care for this image. They are wearing her best dresses, and patterns like that were quite common 140 years ago.

I understand that getting your photo taken back then was a serious business, but jeez, how homely and miserable these girls looks--unless it's just because their mum made those dresses out of the old, stiff draperies!
